Chapter 8 The Real Descendant of the Family
After sending the message, Alison tried to call Charles, but he didn’t answer. She decided to go back to the Cornell Residence that evening and sent him a message. “Send me a message when you arrive at Riverton. Let’s meet tomorrow.”
She didn’t want Charles to find out about their marriage from someone else. It was better for her to talk to him personally.
She sighed inwardly. If her father came, she could refuse him, but it was difficult to deal with this guy…
Time pa**ed quickly. When Alison woke up and changed her clothes, it was almost 6.00PM. After receiving a call from William, the driver, she quickly left the house.
When she got into the car, she saw Brayden. He was still wearing the same suit from noon, with his messy hair falling over his eyes, adding a touch of cool to his otherwise indifferent face.
Alison didn’t speak to him, and the car drove steadily toward the Cornell Residence.
As they approached their destination, Brayden finally spoke up. “If my mom asks you why you don’t like me, what will you say?”
“I’ll tell the truth,” Alison replied.
“Alison.”
“Hm?”
Brayden said, “If you tell them about Julia, my parents and grandfather won’t agree to our divorce.” His chiseled and attractive face had a touch of frostiness, and his dark eyes were veiled with a layer of coolness.
Alison was confused, “Who told you that I’m going to bring up Julia?”
Brayden hesitated. He had a hunch as he asked, “What do you mean?”
“I don’t like you, that’s all,” Alison explained casually. “I find you boring and not worth it.”
She was preoccupied with the matter of Charles and didn’t feel like playing games with him.
Brayden wanted to believe that she was just saying it out of anger, but her reaction told him that she was serious and really didn’t like him anymore.
The thought made him feel frustrated, and a strange emotion lingered in his heart.
“Mr. Cornell, Miss Lambert, we’ve arrived.” William opened the car door.
As he was about to remind Alison to pretend they were still married before discussing their divorce, she had already linked her arm with his and calmly uttered two words, “Let’s go.”
Brayden was speechless.
Why did he feel like she used to act stupid in front of him?
They walked into the Cornell residence, crossed the courtyard, and went to the main house. The Cornell residence had a quadrangle courtyard occupying a large area. When they arrived, everyone else had already gathered.
It was just a small family gathering, with only Brayden’s grandfather, parents, and the housekeeper around apart from the two of them. When they arrived, everyone greeted them warmly.
Brayden’s mother, Sylvia Hughson, even pulled Alison to sit next to her and the two of them chatted happily.
Observing this scene, Brayden furrowed his brows imperceptibly, as he had a feeling that getting a divorce might not be easy.
“Tony, serve the food.”
“Yes, sir.”
Before long, a variety of delicious dishes were brought out.
At first, everyone was eating happily until Barry Cornell cleared his throat and asked a question, “You two have been married for two years; when are you planning on having a child?”
“There’s no rush,” Brayden replied calmly.
“I’m asking Aly, not you.” Barry seemed to dislike Brayden.
Brayden choked.
After swallowing her food, Alison replied the same, “There’s no rush.”
Brayden glanced at her from the corner of his eye. Is she doing this on purpose?
“Is Brayden not treating you well?” Sylvia asked with concern. “If he mistreats you, tell us, and we’ll speak up for you.”
“Speak up if there’s anything; don’t be afraid,” Barry also urged. He really liked Alison. “You’re one of us. We’ll treat you well.”
Brayden was dumbfounded.
He felt it necessary to remind them, “Grandpa, I’m the real descendant of this family.”
“Is that so? For some reason, I remember you married into our family.” Barry had a love-hate relationship with this grandson of his. “Aly plays chess with me, practices art with me, and practices meditation with me. What have you done with me?”
“Didn’t you ask me to manage Cornell Corporation?”
“No.”
Brayden was speechless.
“Grandpa, try this.” Alison used her fork to pick up some meat that Barry loved and handed it to him. “It’s your favorite.”
“Aly, you’re the best.” Barry was immediately happy.
Brayden felt that his presence was rather unnecessary. As he glimpsed at the person who was making his elders so happy, he suddenly felt a hint of happiness that he himself hadn’t even noticed before.
When Alison first married him, she didn’t receive much favor from Barry.
Although his parents were polite to her, they didn’t really like her.
High-cla** families emphasized the importance of matching social status. However, he and Alison had already obtained their marriage certificate, and although his family was dissatisfied, they didn’t show it too obviously.
Later on, after getting to know each other more, his grandfather began to like Alison and would often call him to ask if she was available. He was busy with work most of the time, so he just gave them her phone number and let them contact each other. He wasn’t sure what exactly had happened between them, but their relationship had gotten better and better.
The only thing that was certain was that getting such deep love from his grandfather couldn’t be achieved just by having a sweet mouth and being able to handle things.
Thanks to Alison’s presence, the atmosphere was harmonious, and both Barry and Sylvia were enjoying their meal. Alison knew what was going on.
After the meal, it was time to discuss some things. It would be impolite to discuss them at the dinner table.
“Brayden, go to the kitchen and cut some fruit for Aly,” Sylvia instructed with a gentle and elegant demeanor. “Cut it yourself.”
Brayden glanced at Alison and replied with a slight smile, “Okay.”
As he left, Barry and Sylvia focused their attention on Alison. Brayden’s father, Nathan Cornell, read his newspaper and occasionally listened in like a typical bystander.
“Aly, be honest with me. Is there a special reason why you haven’t conceived a child after so long?” Sylvia asked tactfully.
Alison was taken aback. Before she could react, Sylvia blurted out, “Does Brayden have a problem with his health?”
“No.” Alison didn’t know how to respond all of a sudden.
“Don’t cover for him.” Barry looked kindly at her. “The reason why you haven’t conceived a child after so long must be because that brat has ED.”
Alison didn’t know what to say.
Brayden, who had just come back with the fruit, was dumbfounded too.
Nathan noticed it and raised his eyebrows, looking at Brayden with a meaningful gaze. “Son, do you have ED?”
“You’re the one with ED,” Brayden retorted with a black face.
“If I was, where did you come from then?” Nathan proved that he still had his wits.
Brayden couldn’t say a word.
“What are you still standing there for, Brayden?” Barry was harsh with Brayden as if he was not one of his own. “Hurry up and bring the fruit to Aly.”
