Chapter 7 When the Ex Cries
Alison put down the remote control with an indifferent look. “Then don’t do it,” she said.
Brayden asked in confusion, “What do you mean?”
“When you’re in a hurry to give Julia a status, you’ll offer a higher price to make me leave,” Alison said seriously.
Brayden suddenly became cold. He had never been threatened like this before, and Alison was the first. “Do you really think I can’t do anything to you?”
“How could I think that?” Alison switched to a reality show on the TV and said seriously, “You can freeze my card, limit my expenses and freedom, send me to a remote place, and lock me up. You can also…”
As Brayden listened to her increasingly outrageous words, his anger inexplicably dissipated a lot.
He suddenly wanted to know how this woman, who could make him angry with just a word, managed to stay gentle for two whole years.
“But then Julia can only be a hidden lover.” Alison had regained her composure. “You don’t want her to be gossiped about by everyone, do you?”
Even if Brayden were a legend in the business world, once he was exposed for cheating and keeping a lover, it would lead to much criticism and ridicule.
As for Julia, even with Brayden’s protection, she would still be scrutinized by others as long as she went out shopping or to parties.
Brayden would not allow such things to happen to his own beloved first crush.
“What should I do so that you will come with me?” He took the initiative to speak, ending the previous unpleasant conversation.
“Cut off contact with Julia from now on.” Alison paused the show and said to him, “When we get the divorce certificate, you can resume contact.”
Brayden refused without even thinking. “No.”
“Oh.”
“What?”
“There’s a one-month cooling-off period before filing the application. Who knows if there will be any changes?”
Brayden was speechless.
For a moment, the atmosphere in the living room was somewhat strange.
Alison pressed the play button without being affected by it, and the TV was playing the top-rated reality show of recent times.
As soon as it was turned on, they saw the heartthrob of the nation, Raymond Cooper, chatting with a few others after completing a task, and coincidentally, they were discussing the topic of “first crush.”
“Let me ask you a question. If you are already married now and your first crush suddenly comes back, would you choose to reconcile with her or continue to stay with your wife?”
“Nonsense. Of course, I’ll choose my wife!”
“Anyone who chooses their first crush must have a problem with their head.”
“Mr. Cooper, what about you?”
“I’m not a sc*mbag.” Raymond exuded a sunny temperament, and his warm voice was extremely soothing to hear. “Life is a process of constantly moving forward. Those who choose their first crush probably can’t tell whether they really like their first crush or if it’s their past dissatisfaction and obsession holding them back.”
“That’s deep.”
“Speaking of this, I remember my childhood friend who broke up with his current girlfriend for his first crush. He’s just a sc*mbag.”
“Well, people say that when the ex cries, the current lover will lose.”
“Hahaha…”
The reality show continued to play.
Brayden’s gaze became deep and oppressive as it fell on Alison, who remained calm and composed.
He strongly suspected that she was trying to prove a point to him.
“Alison.”
“Hmm?”
“I can agree to your request.” Brayden relented as he really wanted the divorce. So, he negotiated the terms with her. “But before we cut off contact, I need to investigate her car accident.”
“Okay.” Alison didn’t push further. “If there’s any need to talk to Julia during that time, have Conner handle it.”
Brayden hesitated. He wanted to refuse, but considering how much Alison was adored by his parents and grandfather, he still agreed. “Okay.”
“Go take care of your business.” Alison was eager for the divorce and had no love for him. “Pick me up at 6.00PM.”
“Okay.”
A deal was done.
Alison turned off the television, put on her slippers, and headed upstairs. The distance between them had grown and the hearts that had been close were now drifting apart.
As Alison closed her bedroom door, Brayden felt a strange sense of loss, as if something was slipping away from him. He furrowed his brow, then adjusted his tie with his fair hands that were gorgeous to see. After that, he glanced at the closed bedroom door and left the villa for the office.
He still needed to investigate Julia’s car accident.
After taking a nap following her shower, Alison was awoken by her phone ringing. Seeing that it was Whiskers calling, she rubbed her head to clear her mind and answered the call. “Hello.”
“Miss Lambert! Miss Lambert! Miss Lambert!” James exclaimed excitedly, his voice carrying a thick sense of youthfulness.
Alison was taken aback. She moved the phone away from her ear and then spoke again. “What’s up?”
“Charles is here.”
“Who?”
“Charles Adkins.”
“What’s he here for?” Alison was confused.
“He said he was asked by Mr. Lambert to handle your divorce with Brayden.” James sounded uncertain but couldn’t contain his curiosity. “Did you and Brayden secretly get married?”
Alison pinched her tired brow, but James wanted to know more. “Miss Lambert?”
“When will he arrive?” Alison felt helpless.
“Around 11.00PM tonight.” James was burning with curiosity but didn’t dare to keep asking. “He just set out for the airport.”
Alison wondered how to stop Charles from coming. “Got it.”
She hung up the phone.
When they got married, Brayden never asked about her identity, and when the holidays came around and he asked if she wanted to go back, she said no, and he didn’t ask any more questions.
If Charles came, Brayden would certainly take notice.
James looked at the disconnected phone with confusion. He hadn’t received an answer to his questions yet.
He quickly opened the WhatsApp chat window and his fingers flew over the keyboard as he started bombarding Alison with messages.
Whiskers texted, “You haven’t told me if you really got married.”
Whiskers texted, “Why did Carl say you were getting a divorce?”
Whiskers texted, “What happened in the past two years?”
Whiskers texted, “Miss Lambert, where are you?”
Alison looked at the flood of messages and considered before finally responding. “It’s true. Our relationship has broken down.”
Whiskers was shocked. “What?!”
The series of exclamation points couldn’t sufficiently express the agitation in his heart.
My Miss Lambert! My idol. She got married! It actually happened!
Whiskers texted, ‘Boohoo, are you kidding me?’
Alison ignored the question and added, “Don’t spread the news for now. Apart from you and Charles, don’t let the others know.”
Whiskers froze.
He looked at the people around him with cold sweat dripping from his forehead. How should I tell Miss Lambert?
The others crowding around his computer already knew about it.
